What it means
A family of ideas favoring the use of technology to expand human capabilities and overcome some biological limitations. It extends beyond AI to health, longevity and enhancement. The Humanity+ declaration also recognizes risks and individual choice; transhumanism is not simply “replace humans with machines.”
The strongest case
Reducing involuntary suffering and expanding the options available to people are compelling goals. Existing medicine already changes biological constraints, making the boundary between treatment and enhancement less obvious than it first appears.
The difficult part
Access, consent and social pressure matter. Enhancements can deepen inequality or become effectively mandatory in competitive settings. People also disagree about which changes preserve autonomy and which redefine the values being pursued.
