Human augmentation
Catalogued:
What it means
Using AI to extend what people can do while retaining meaningful human participation. Examples include drafting assistance, translation, analysis and accessibility tools. Augmentation describes a relationship within a workflow; it is not a guarantee that employment, autonomy or bargaining power will improve.
The strongest case
Tools can reduce tedious work, widen access to expertise and help people perform tasks they could not otherwise complete. Complementarity may produce benefits that a simple replacement story misses.
The difficult part
Who chooses the workflow and captures the gains? An assistant may help a worker today while enabling tighter monitoring or replacement tomorrow. Assessment should include learning, control, workload and compensation, not just output speed.
