Open-weight models

What it means
Models whose learned parameters are made available for others to obtain, subject to the release’s license. This can allow local inference and modification. It does not necessarily include training data, training code or an unrestricted license, so open weights and open source should not be used interchangeably.
The strongest case
Local operation can improve control, enable research and reduce dependence on a hosted service. A release may be useful even when it falls short of a broader open-source definition.
The difficult part
Restrictions vary, and the practical ability to reproduce training may remain absent. Distribution can also make some safeguards easier to remove. The right question is which capabilities and freedoms a particular release provides.
