What it means
An approach to AI development emphasizing freedoms to use, study, modify and share a system. The Open Source Initiative’s AI definition specifies what must be available to exercise those freedoms. An accessible download alone does not establish that a release qualifies.
The strongest case
Independent inspection, adaptation and reproducibility can reduce dependence on a provider and broaden participation. Communities can repair or specialize systems instead of waiting for the owner’s roadmap.
The difficult part
The term is contested in practice, especially around training information and licensing. Formal freedom does not make compute affordable or prevent misuse. Judge the actual license and available materials, not the openness of the launch announcement.
