What it means
The substitution of machines for tasks previously performed by people, and the resulting changes in work. Task exposure, technical automability and actual job loss are different measures. Deployment decisions depend on cost, reliability, organization and demand, not capability alone.
The strongest case
Automation can eliminate dangerous or tedious tasks and lower the cost of goods and services. These gains can be substantial even when the distribution of benefits remains a separate political problem.
The difficult part
Jobs bundle many tasks, and new review or coordination labor may appear. Some workers face concentrated losses while benefits are dispersed. Retraining slogans do not settle questions of income, bargaining power or responsibility for transition costs.
