Loose internet labels often applied to people seen as pessimistic about AI or as wanting to slow development. They are frequently hostile descriptions rather than the person’s own identity. Their use in a debate reveals the speaker’s framing, not a reliable summary of the target’s beliefs.
The strongest case
Labels can help readers recognize recurring rhetorical coalitions and the history of a discussion. Some people adopt a label ironically or use it to signal a real disagreement about pace and risk.
The difficult part
The labels conflate researchers, advocates, critics and people with unrelated concerns. Describe the actual position: which risk, which proposed restriction, under what conditions? Neither name establishes that an argument is mistaken.
